An explanation of the roles that are available to Instructors who wish to enroll additional participants into their course(s).

Overview: The Desire2Learn learning management system used by MSU features automatic course provisioning whereby all courses listed in the Banner system are automatically created and available for use by MSU instructors. These courses are populated with students that have registered via the MSU registration system.

Additionally, Desire2Learn has enrollment capability built in to the learning management system itself so that Instructors are able to enroll participants into their Desire2Learn course offering according to need. These additional participants can be enrolled into courses utilizing one of the 5 role types described below.

Instructor Role Course Assistant Role Student Role Audit Role Librarian Role

  • Manage Files – upload/download, cut/copy/paste, delete, zip/unzip

Note that the "Instructor" role gives full ability to the enrolled participant regarding design in the course including access to all functions in the "Manage Files" area, all course Editing functionality, and access to the Grades area and related functions. Typically, the Instructor role is reserved for participants that are working in the course offering in a co-instructor capacity. Caution should be exercised when enrolling individuals in this role!

Note that Course Assistant accounts can see and edit the Grades in the class. Caution!

Differences between the Student role and the Audit role:
A student auditing the course does not receive credit for the course though they can participate at the level of a student. MSU states "Registered students may, with the permission of the instructor, enroll in a course as auditors and earn zero credit. A student must decide to audit a course by the tenth class day of the semester. Auditors pay the same fees as students enrolled for credit." (from the "MSU Online Catalog -Taking Courses for Zero Credit" - http://www.montana.edu/wwwcat/register/register3.html)

Using an Audit role can also serve to distinguish users in a course from student accounts. When enrolled as an "Audit" role, participants appear in the classlist with their role listed as Audit – not Student. The Audit role could be used for individuals in the course who are participating as librarians, tutors, or guest instructors.

  • Surveys – can view survey reports only if instructor releases them to Librarian role
  • Checklist – can view checklists

Typically, Instructors restrict enabling this role to librarians at the university level. The role is very similar to the Course Assistant role with the exception of being able to see or interact with the Grade area.
