Make Your Course Active

Automatically provisioned Desire2Learn courses are made available to the "instructor of record" listed in Banner via dates that correspond to terms. When instructors make a course active, the course becomes visible and accessible to students between the start and end dates of the course.

At your "My Home" page, a visible gray exclamation symbol indicates your course IS NOT active. The absence of the gray exclamation symbol indicates that your course IS active.

To activate your course there are two main methods:

from the "My Home" page and from inside a course.

From the "My Home" page:

Select the pencil corresponding with the course you wish to make active.

On the resulting page, select the "Active:" checkbox.

Select "Save" and your course will be made active.

When back at your "My Home" page, the gray exclamation symbol is gone - indicating that your course is active. Students can see and access your course between the start and end dates of the course.

From inside a course:

Go into the course by selecting the course hotlink.

When in the course, along the upper right of the frame, select the "Edit Course" hotlink.

Select the "Course Offering Information" hotlink.

On the resulting page, select the "Active:" checkbox.

Select "Save" and your course will be made active.

When back at your My Home page, the gray exclamation symbol is gone - indicating that your course is active. Students can see and access your course between the start and end dates of the course.

About Terms, Start and End dates, Instructor of Record:

In most cases, "terms" (typically aligned with semesters Fall, Spring, Summer) determine when courses appear on an individual's "My Home" page. Course offerings for automatically provisioned courses will be visible to instructors within a few weeks after registration begins for an upcoming term. Once the upcoming term courses are loaded into the Desire2Learn system, instructors will see courses arrayed in their "My Courses" widget under the header for the appropriate term.

Registered students can access a course between Start and End Dates. Start and End dates are established for a course within a term. Students can access at the Start date of a course offering only if the course is made active. Instructors must make a course active before students can gain entrance to the offering. Note that instructors can make their course active earlier than a start date but that students will not be able to access until the course start date arrives.

To check the Start and End Dates of your course you can click the pencil icon to the right of your course title when viewing the course under the "My Courses" widget on your "My Home" page. The Start and End Date information will appear on the "Course Offering Information" page.

Caution! Instructors shouldn’t make their course inactive once the term begins unless students are made aware that this is going to occur ahead of time as it can cause great confusion! Always know that there are many other ways to “hide” aspects of a course as opposed to making the entire course disappear!

Instructor of Record: The instructor that a department has identified in Banner as being the instructor that is officially teaching a course offering. The course and enrollment information in Desire2Learn comes from what is in Banner. When an automatically provisioned course offering is created in D2L the instructor of record information is associated with the course offering. Instructors should work with their department and the Registrar's office to have instructor of record information correctly reflected in Banner. If you are a co-instructor, have the instructor of record give you access to the course by enrolling you into the course as an instructor.
