Getting Started with Desire2Learn

Successful Teaching Online

1) What is Desire2Learn?

Desire2Learn Learning Environment is a complete web-based suite of easy-to-use teaching and learning tools for course development, delivery, and management. Desire2Learn is accessed through a password, maintaining a secure environment for course content and student information.

MSU Users should use their NetID to login to Desire2Learn. What is the MSU NetID?

2) How can I use Desire2Learn in my courses?

Desire2Learn offers instructors a wide range of options to build online technologies into a course. These include:

  • Posting course materials, i.e. syllabus, handouts, lecture notes, assignments, etc.
  • Integrating a wide range of text, web and multimedia resources into the course
  • Facilitating active learning through group discussions and web based activities
  • Communicating with and providing feedback to students through email, discussions, chat and self tests
  • Posting grades in a secure environment that allows only the individual to see his/her own grades
  • See "Getting Started Basics" for some intitial instructions.

3) What is involved in obtaining a Desire2Learn course?

  • Faculty do NOT need to request course offerings on Desire2Learn as all course setions of active course offerings will be posted on Desire2Learn. Faculty will need to activate the offering to make it available to their students. To merge multiple course sections into a single offering, faculty should email ecat@montana.edu with the course name and the sections to be merged.
  • Desire2Learn workshops are scheduled ongoing from semester to semester.
  • In addition to the active course shells, faculty may choose to request Master or Practice shells for their use. Use a Master shell to back up and repurpose content. Use a practice shell to develop new content and to experiment with new features. Request a D2L Master or Practice Course
